Woodridge Window Well Covers & Basement Windows

Woodridge is a 1970s and 80s town. The median home here was built in 1982, 46.2% of the village's housing went up between 1970 and 1989, and about 68% of it predates 1990. That is the single largest concentration of the era we do most of our work in β€” steel wells installed with the house, now forty or fifty years old and never covered.

The village takes basement water seriously enough to help pay for fixing it. Woodridge runs a Private Sanitary Sewer Incentive Program that reimburses 50% of the installation cost, up to a maximum per project type, for overhead sewer systems, check valves, gate valves and foundation drain removal with sump pump installation.

A window well cover is the piece none of those programs cover, and it is the cheapest one. It stops rain, snowmelt and leaves from collecting against your foundation in the first place, before any valve or pump has to deal with it.

The Village Will Cost-Share Your Sewer Work

Woodridge's Private Sanitary Sewer Incentive Program reimburses 50% of the installation cost, up to the maximum for the respective project, across five project types: an overhead sewer system, an exterior check valve in the clean-out, an interior check valve, an interior gate valve, and foundation drain removal with sump pump installation. A building permit and a licensed plumber are required. Public Works can be reached at 630-719-4753 for current terms and the per-project maximums.

That last project type is the one homeowners misread. Removing a foundation drain from the sanitary sewer and putting it on a sump pump moves your groundwater out of the sewer β€” which the village requires anyway. Village code prohibits draining swimming pool water, sump pump discharge, gutter or downspout drainage or similar surface water into a sanitary sewer.

Once that water is on a sump, volume matters. Every gallon an uncovered window well catches is a gallon your pump has to move. Covering the wells is the one step in that chain that costs nothing to run.

Permits For Windows In Woodridge

Woodridge adopted the 2021 International Residential Code effective November 13, 2023, along with the 2021 building, mechanical, fuel gas, fire, property maintenance and energy codes, the 2020 National Electrical Code and the Illinois State Plumbing Code β€” each with local amendments.

The village's permit FAQ is unusually clear on windows: if you are replacing your windows or doors with the same size, no permit is required; if the size is changing, a permit is required. That matters for egress, because enlarging a basement opening to reach a compliant escape window is a size change.

Basement finishes do require a permit and are classified with major residential projects requiring five sets of drawings. Call Community Development at 630-719-4750 to confirm your scope before you order anything.

The Ridge, Crabtree Creek And A Developer's Village

Woodridge incorporated on August 24, 1959 with fewer than 500 residents, founded by a housing developer β€” which is why the village grew subdivision by subdivision rather than outward from a downtown. Normadale, Winston Hills, Noble Woods, International Estates, Seven Bridges, Farmingdale Village, Cedar Hill and Woodview are among the names.

The village sits in a wooded area above a steep hillside known locally as The Ridge, overlooking the East Branch of the DuPage River and the Des Plaines Valley. Crabtree Creek runs through the village, and Woodridge has completed streambank stabilization between Westview Lane and Woodridge Drive. The village participates in the DuPage River Salt Creek Workgroup.

Woodridge spans four townships β€” Lisle, Downers Grove, DuPage and Lemont β€” and small portions of the village fall in Will and Cook counties rather than DuPage. If you are near an edge, confirm which county's stormwater rules apply to your lot.
